Le Trésor des Trésors

attributed to Nicolas Flamel (pseudo-Flamel) · 47 hand-illuminated leaves · French · c. 1700

Picture a single coal kept alive for four hundred years, passed hand to careful hand, never once allowed to go cold. That is what this book was. Some books are written to be read; this one was written to be hidden. It comes down to us under a borrowed name, Nicolas Flamel, the scribe who supposedly turned lead to gold, and its forty-seven leaves were never a public lesson but a private hoard, the “treasure of treasures” each owner guarded like that live coal. It is a slim thing, a handful of leaves you could hold in one palm, and people kept it shut for four centuries anyway. For all that time it sat closed in a vault, its illuminations seen by almost no one. What you are about to open is that hoard finally unlatched: the secret left out in the daylight, on purpose, for anyone who cares to look.

Before the book is opened, let me make the terms plain.

I am giving this away. The translation is not sold, not gated, not wrapped in advertisement, and never will be: I set it down to pass knowledge along and for the plain love of the game.

And here I owe a debt I want to name loudly, because it is real. The forty-seven leaves you are about to read are not a public-domain scan dressed up. They are the Science Museum Group’s own digitisation of manuscript MS/0383, catalogued to c. 1700, made and released by that institution under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 4.0 licence. The old manuscript belongs to the ages. This photograph of it belongs to the Science Museum’s care and generosity. Without their decision to open the vault under an open licence, this edition I am handing you could not exist at all.

This translation is a derivative work and inherits the same licence. That is honoured here in full and on purpose:

  • BY The Science Museum Group is credited here, on the work itself, and on every leaf. Their name travels with the book.
  • NC Non-commercial, without exception. No sale, no paywall, no advertisement, no sponsorship. My covenant for this whole room and the Science Museum’s condition turn out to be one and the same.
  • SA This edition is offered onward under the very same CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Take it, build on it — and pass it along under the same open terms it reached you on.

So I want to say it plainly to the Science Museum Group, London. Thank you for keeping this book, for digitising it with care, and for the rare grace of releasing it under a licence that lets a stranger translate it for no reason but love. How often does an institution open its vault and ask nothing back but that you keep it open too? This edition exists because you chose that. The gratitude is total.
