ABOUT

AETHER is an online gallery, interactive laboratory, and reading room. It brings together mathematical art, experiments you can try in your browser, and writing about the ideas behind them.

ARMISTICE's lore is a form of hard science-fiction worldbuilding: an imagined world built around real mathematical experiments and working software. Its alchemical language and cosmic imagery draw on historical traditions and give that world its character. The calculations are meant to be checked; the mythology is an invitation to play. The grand titles are part of the fun.

:: In Plain Language

ARMISTICE is the larger project behind this website. It is one person's ongoing exploration of mathematics, art, software, and the history of ideas. It includes programs for making and studying images, a collection of experiments and research notes, and readings of historical works. AETHER brings these different strands together in a place you can explore.

Much of the artwork begins with a simple process: a mathematical rule moves a point, then uses its new position to move it again. Repeating that process and drawing the results reveals intricate shapes. The main engine, called Cosmopoiesis, lets you change the settings and watch those shapes change. The project follows the questions these experiments raise, building tools and explanations along the way.

Start with the Engine to make and explore forms, browse the Gallery for finished work, or visit the Scriptorium to read historical texts. The visitor's guide introduces the different parts of the site. No background in mathematics or alchemy is needed to begin.

:: A Word from the Author

I built this place slowly, room by room, the way you build anything you mean to live in. Mathematics keeps house with alchemy here, and both run on the same quiet suspicion: that the very small and the very vast keep the same laws. People have circled that idea for ages. The oldest way of saying it goes:

Quod est superius est sicut quod est inferius, et quod est inferius est sicut quod est superius, ad perpetranda miracula rei unius.

That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above — to accomplish the miracles of the one thing.

— Hermes Trismegistus · Tabula Smaragdina

ARMISTICE grew out of an obsession with hermeticism, alchemy, physics, and dynamical systems. The old practices and the empirical sciences circle the same questions; here the overlap is laid out in the open — experiments paired with renders, down to a published Null Ledger of the avenues that died. This is a hobby and a passion project. I am not a mathematician, just a curious person.

At its heart sits the engine I named Cosmopoiesis, Greek for “world-making”: a trigonometric map that folds back on itself and throws off structure that never repeats. I added one coupling of my own and spent a long time charting the forms that live inside it. Nearly everything here — every render, every named form — is that one engine at a different coordinate. If you don't know where to begin, visit the Engine and watch the forms breathe.

:: The Theory

The substrate is a 2D non-area-preserving trigonometric map parameterised by three values (α, μ, ε) and a zoom scalar. Iterate it under a fixed kernel and each coordinate settles into a bounded, structured attractor. The order matters: a coordinate gets found first, by one route or another. The picture comes after — the consequence, never the cause. So the Translexicon of 1,846 entities is a periodic table for that substrate: each name is an address the math was found at, not a label hung on a plot.

Three pillars, e, φ, √3, generate seven derived constants (𝔉, ⊙, η, H, V, λ, Δ) by algebraic closure: ten canonical sacred constants in total, with the engine's parameters, those constants, and the entity coordinates all folding back onto the same three generators. The hermetic register is not ornament: the alchemical operations map onto exact mathematics (sublimatio = exponentiation, solutio = division), so the same equations read in two languages. The full derivation chain lives in the Principia and the Mathematica.

ARMISTICE is exploration, not authority. The sacred constants, the named entities, the derivations are one self-consistent symbolic system: a lens and a labour, not a peer-reviewed claim that the universe is any of this. I set the work down for you to test, walk through, take apart, and re-find at your own pace. So before you take anything here on trust, ask yourself what would actually convince you, then go look for it. Believe nothing on my say-so; investigate whatever resonates. Solve et Coagula.
