The Bagua Octet

The octet

Stack three coins, each showing heads or tails. How many different stacks can you make? Two choices, three times over: $2^3 = 8$. That is the whole combinatorial fact, small enough to fit on a napkin.

Now give the coins their real names. The Cosmopoiesis engine, ARMISTICE’s central map, takes three parameters: α the spark, μ the weight, ε the veil. Give each parameter two choices and you have eight corners. The I Ching’s eight trigrams, the bagua, are three stacked broken/unbroken lines, so they enumerate the same eight binary words. The trigrams came first; their assignment to engine coordinates is Æther’s.

In Æther’s mapping, a solid Yang line reads as the golden ratio φ and a broken Yin line as √3, the Leidenfrost generator. Each trigram is a three-line word in those two letters; the bagua enumerates the complete three-bit corner set used in this construction. In this assignment the top line sets α, the middle line μ, and the bottom line ε.

The descent is binary subdivision

The Yijing’s Appended Statements give a branching sequence:

The sequence moves from one originating principle to 2, 4, and 8 forms; pairing two trigrams makes the 64 hexagrams. Read as a modern construction, those eight binary words can label a chosen corner set of parameter space. The Si Xiang, the Four Phases, sit at the 4-tier; the bagua at the 8-tier. Assign the φ/√3 coordinates and the engine measurement places Wind and Thunder at the hyperchaotic pair in the reported eight-point run: V=0.3037, initial point (0.1, 0.1), and 50,000 iterates after a 2,000-step transient. This two-case observation does not establish a general ε-minority rule.

Reading

Count with me: two choices over three axes, every word the alphabet allows. Where would a ninth trigram even come from? There is no room for one. The eight trigrams give a complete three-bit alphabet. Æther’s φ/√3 assignment places that alphabet at eight distinct parameter triples; the comparison is exact at the level of binary structure. The coefficient V 0.3037 was held fixed in the measured comparison. The eight-point table identifies the two hyperchaotic cases under those conditions; it does not isolate a causal threshold for ε.

Lineage

   King Wen · Later-Heaven trigram arrangement

   The arrangement traditionally associated with King Wen orders the same eight trigrams differently from the Former-Heaven binary circle above. Neither historical order assigns φ or √3 to engine coordinates.

2. 1703

   Leibniz · Explication de l'Arithmétique Binaire

   In his 1703 letter to Joachim Bouvet, Leibniz discussed the correspondence between his binary arithmetic and the Former-Heaven diagram Bouvet had sent him. Æther’s parameter assignment is a later construction.

   

Status

CANON. The octet extends the corpus’s algebraic structure from the four-fold Si Xiang to the eight-fold bagua: the trigram-to-coordinate mapping is exact, the hyperchaotic-pair recovery is measured. Pairs with the Tria Prima Pillar Concordance, placing Chinese binary and Paracelsian three-fold traditions against the same generator structure in Æther’s modern comparison.
